How to Detect a Gas Leak in Your Home

Many people don’t realize plumbing includes gas lines. Gas plumbing is a specialized field, so ensure that your plumber is appropriately licensed to plumb gas. Different types of pipes are used for natural or propane gas. Steel – also called black pipe and copper are the most common materials. Both PVC and polyethylene (PE) pipes can be used for pipes that are buried in the ground outside a building. Natural gas and propane provide power for your water heater, stoves, fireplaces, and other gas-powered appliances. However, these pipes can become corroded over time, especially when plumbed in the ground. Gas leaks allow the gas to escape through compromised fittings. Furthermore, improperly installed appliances will become loose over time from foundation shifts or just age. This will let gas escape into your home. This can be very dangerous and lead to disastrous problems when not dealt with quickly and safely. Customers call Duncan Plumbing saying Atmos turned off my gas for a leak. This requires a plumber to locate the gas leak & repair the gas leak before turning the gas back on.

TELL TALE SIGNS OF A GAS LEAK

 DEAD PLANT LIFE

One of the ways to notice a gas leak is noticing any dead plants around your home, particularly indoor plants. In fact, you will see dead plants even when you can’t see underground gas lines. Plants use the soil where the gas lines run through and thereby can work to serve as a way to monitor whether your home is experiencing a gas leak.

HISSING SOUND

The strange hissing sound you hear when a leak is prevalent can be a surefire way to know that your home has a gas leak. Be mindful of paying attention to a hissing sound if you suspect a gas leak from one or more of your gas appliances.

A ROTTEN EGG SMELL

Another telltale sign of detecting a gas leak is the rotten egg smell. Propane and natural gas both have a very pungent and distinctive smell because of their chemical composition. The nose knows when there’s a gas leak making gas leak detection easy.

Why is it Important to Fix a Gas Leak?

A skilled plumber like Duncan Plumbing are specially licensed by the Railroad commission to work on gas. We are gas plumbers & will easily find the source of a natural gas or propane leak with gas leak detection. Natural gas & propane are highly combustible. If you think you have a gas leak, stop using open flames, ignitors and lighters immediately.

If you suspect a gas leak has occurred in your home, make sure to open all windows, turn off all pilot lights at the water heater, for example and leave the house as quickly as possible. Contact Duncan Plumbing who will isolate the leak & repair the gas leak properly, have the work verified & inspected with the city & Atmos will turn your gas back on.
