Time to Install New Shut Off Valves?

The angle stop is also known as a shut off valve. They are all over the house - behind every toilet, sink and at the water heater. You should have one at your house and yard line. They are angle stops and they are the first line of defense in preventing your home from flooding.
The shut off valve will allow for a quick and easy turn off of the water flow to the fixtures or even to your entire house. An angle stop is your best friend in an emergency. Say your water heater is flooding or your toilet is running while you wait for a repair man, a quick turn and you can stop the water to your leaking water heater. You may have a dripping faucet or a flooding kitchen, or if the fill valve in your toilet needs to be switched out, turning the knob a 1/4 or sometimes all the way to the left will prevent water flow. A shut off valve is extremely handy when searching out a leak. They allow you to run isolation tests on the home's plumbing system.
There will come a time when you need to replace the angle stop. Consider that angle stop is constantly under pressure from the water coming into the house. If an older angle stop is turned to the off position, it can easily spring a leak or not shut off all the way. Older angle stops turn in a 360 motion and have the oval shaped handle. By today’s standards, those old style stops are considered inefficient and more likely to fail. Professionals like Duncan Plumbing recommend ¼ turn angle stops for homeowners who need shut off valves replaced.
Angle stops have a wide array of applications when it comes to piping material. Cast iron pipe involves putting pipe dope on the threads and screwing the angle stop directly on to the pipe. With copper tubing, the common method is to use a compression fitting angle stop. You only have to put the backing nut and the compression ring on the pipe and tighten the nut onto the stop. Its even easier to apply an angle stop to pex. The only thing the plumber has to do is set a crimp ring onto the exposed pex pipe and crimp a ring to hold the stop in place.
If it's time to replace your old angle stops or perhaps you need to install a whole home shut off valve, give Duncan Plumbing a call at 972-937-0040 and we will be happy to serve you!
