When temperatures start to drop, it is important to take precautions to ensure your pipes don't freeze. Frozen pipes can burst and cause significant water damage to your home or business.

  • First, detach and drain all garden hoses. Then you want to place a Styrofoam cover over your outside faucet. If you're leaving home for an extended amount of time, in addition to using a foam faucet cover on each spigot, be sure to also drain the water lines (Draining the water line would mean you shut off the water to your house and turn on all of the outside faucets. Letting them run until there is just a trickle. Make sure to turn them back off when you are finished). In addition, any exposed outdoor pipes should be insulated.
  • To avoid any bigger issues later, it's important to fix leaks as soon as possible. Even a tiny hole can let Cold air in and increase the likelihood of frozen pipes.
  • Every day, run water through your drains to avert freezing. Also, when the temperature falls below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, open up your faucets slightly so there is a small drip — that way, there is a continual flow of water which will prevent frozen pipes.
  • No matter the weather conditions, always know where your shut-off valve is located. It is typically placed near your water meter.
  • Pipes that are located under cabinets are more vulnerable to freezing because they lack access to warmer air. To prevent your pipes from freezing, open up your cabinet doors during times when temperatures drop below freezing.
  • You'll want to do everything possible to keep the cold air out and protect your plumbing. Inspect your home for any gaps or drafts that could let in the chilly air.
  • If you're going to be away from home and its cold outside, set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. By circulating warm air throughout your piping system, you'll prevent them from freezing over while you're gone.

It is important to not wait until temperatures drop below freezing to take the necessary steps in protecting your plumbing system. By taking action early, you can prevent damage and possible costly repairs. Taking preventive measures now will save you time and money in the long run, so make sure to check your home for any potential issues before cold weather strikes. Don’t wait - start preparing today!
