Tankless water heaters are already the norm in Europe and Asia. However, in the United States the tankless are not so popular.  Homeowners and commercial businesses in the U.S. have traditionally chosen the old tank-type water heater. The pendulum is beginning to swing in the other direction as consumers are becoming more aware of environment, efficiency, safety, space-saving and other benefits like instant & endless hot water.

Manufacturing growth for the tankless water heater in the US has spurred an upward trend in sales of the tankless models. Recent market studies show dominant growth through 2024. Government regulations all over the world, including minimum energy-efficiency standards recommended for home appliances are creating growth opportunities for the tankless water heater, Persistence Market Research reports.  The US Department of Energy issued new standards in 2015. These standards increased demand for energy-efficient heating products including the tankless water heater. The standard is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 154 million metric tons over the next 30 years. The savings also saves 2.6 quadrillion BTUs of energy and nets consumers a savings of 8.7 billion.

THE COST OF A TANKLESS

The report predicts a decline in price for energy-efficient units as competition heats up. Large scale manufacturing of tankless water heaters drives down their costs and creates an opportunity for cost-conscious mainstream consumers. But today customers are still weighing the pros and cons of a nearly $1000 higher cost than the old tank-style water heaters

Regulations Could Push Consumers to Tankless

In the US, the 2015 DOE regulation is the only federal ruling in place currently. No big surprise that California is leading in state and local policies regarding climate and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from residential and commercial buildings.

Director of Marketing for Bradford White Corporation sites California’s Title 24 as an example of state rules regarding environment and residential impact. Traditionally other states follow suit. Expect to see state and local regulations tightening down as we progress towards the future.

Duncan Plumbing is a preferred Bradford White contractor. Preferred contractors like Duncan Plumbing install units, service and repair any Bradford White water heater. More information can be found here: https://contractorfinder.bradfordwhite.com

WHAT MAJOR MANUFACTURERS  HAVE TO SAY

Navien  is another big name in tankless water heaters. Product Manager for Navien reports that the Title 24 requirements drive the rest of the country’s standards for energy efficiency. In addition, requirements for on-demand hot water recirculation that prevent water waste are common. Instant hot water is not only a benefit for comfort but eliminates the need to turn on the water for a period of time while the water gets hot. This equals energy and water savings. A recirculation pump offers on-demand hot water solutions. Navien has a Hot Button which provides exactly this type of on-demand recirculation. You might also have Duncan Plumbing Solutions install a recirculation pump.

Marketing Manager for Noritz  says the drive to decrease carbon footprint is the primary route that affects the market. In states like California and Hawaii, the drive is toward condensing gas technology and away from tank style water heaters.

Rheem Manufacturing Company is one of the bigger brands around Ellis county providing residential and commercial water heaters and boilers. Mainly due to Home Depot picking up the brand they also sell products under the Ruud brand. They are prominent providers of tankless water heaters and offer 100 years of manufacturing experience. Ways a Tankless Water Heater Saves Energy

Some companies report an increase in regulations on water conservation by implementing requirements for hot water recirculation systems that avoid wasting water while consumers wait for hot water to arrive. Certain units offer an integrated recirculation pump. Other units incorporate on-board pumps that have a dedicated return line. Duncan Plumbing offers an upgrade to existing tankless systems by adding a recirculation system.

VP for Rinnai America says builders and consumers look for high-efficiency products like tankless water heaters to meet building codes.  Certainly the builders that are choosing to install tankless water heaters  need to demonstrate efficiency of these units. However, the units must be affordable.  It matters that a builder can say, “we are meeting energy standards” but only if that also means “we can afford it”, says Erica Duncan of Duncan Plumbing in Waxahachie.

It’s always good for the businesses and consumers when competition heats up. When manufacturing firms compete, consumers see better prices, better quality and more innovation. This translates to more business. It’s this precise innovation that is the basis for US Economy.
