HOW TO AVOID A HALLOWEEN PLUMBING NIGHTMARE

As Halloween approaches, plumbing is likely the last thing on your mind. You are already tasked with the job of helping the kids pick out costumes, stocking up on candy for the neighboring kids (or yourself), and carving those spooky pumpkins. While we here at Duncan Plumbing can’t help you with all that, we can help you avoid some common plumbing problems that can happen this time of year.
Here are some Halloween plumbing tips to help you avoid a plumbing problem that will put a damper on your Halloween spirit.

DRAINS BACKING UP

Halloween means lots of pumpkin fun. All of us love scooping out the pulp, but all that squishy, orange goo can turn into a plumbing disaster if you put it down the drain or down the garbage disposal. Many people inadvertently put the guts, seeds and pulp down the kitchen drain. It seems like a convenient way to get rid of the pulp, but it will turn your Halloween into a real horror scene.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL STOPPED UP

If you plan on carving pumpkins as part of your Halloween festivities, ensure the pulp and seeds make it to the trash and not down the kitchen drain or into your garbage disposal. The pulp from inside the pumpkin will create a clogged drain. Pulp ground up in the garbage disposal will not just cause a broken garbage disposal but will can harden in your pipes. A seized-up garbage disposal or clog from will lead to malfunctions in the garbage disposal.

CLOGGED DRAINS

Another important thing to dispose of properly this Halloween is candy wrappers. All too often those little clear wrappers end up down a drain somewhere. This can also cause your drains to backup and clog, so it is important to dispose of those pesky wrappers properly.

FLUSHED WIPES OR COTTON BALLS

Never flush wipes or cotton balls down the drain. Even grease-based makeup can slow down drains dramatically. After your children have come home from collecting their goodies, make sure to use a disposable wipe to remove any costume makeup instead of washing it down the drain. Grease-based makeup can stick to the sides of your pipes, reducing drainage.
