Get ready for the excitement of a lifetime - cleaning the toilet! But hold on a minute, it's not just about hygiene, but also about boosting the lifespan of your beloved fixture.

What You’ll Need

  • Rubber gloves, an apron, and protective eyewear.
  • Disinfectant
  • Scrubbing Brush
  • Pumice Stone (if you have hard water stains)
  • Antibacterial Spray or Wipes
  • Paper Towels or Cleaning Rags

Alright, let's dive right in now that we have all the essentials! To really maximize the effectiveness of your chosen toilet bowl cleaner, we've got a pro tip for you: reduce the water level in the bowl. This can easily be done by turning off the water supply and giving it a good flush.

Get ready to make your toilet sparkle! Start by applying the cleaner around the rim of the bowl in a circular motion, letting it drain down the sides. Don't forget to check the instructions on your cleaner for any specific directions. Some cleaners may require you to let them sit before scrubbing or rinsing. If you have hard water, consider using a cleaner specifically designed to combat lime scale, like borax.

Once you've let the cleaner sit, grab a stiff plastic bristled brush and start scrubbing! Make sure to cover every inch of the bowl, including under the rim. For those stubborn stains, reach for a wet pumice stone and give them a good scrub. Once finished turn the water back on and flush.

Now the outside

Let's tackle the toilet's exterior next! Grab your trusty antibacterial spray and give the outside of the toilet a good spritz. Just be sure to check the instructions to see if the spray needs time to work its magic. Once it's had a chance to sit, grab a paper towel or cleaning rag and wipe everything clean. Don't forget those tricky, hard-to-reach spots! An old toothbrush can work wonders, like tackling the toilet seat hinge (but remember to keep it with your other cleaning tools so it doesn't get mixed up). If you're feeling extra motivated, you can even remove the toilet seat and give it a separate cleaning. Let's make that toilet shine!

Really? The Toilet Brush

Yay, our toilet is sparkling clean! Now it's time to tackle the toilet brush. After all is said and done, we want to make sure it's germ-free and fresh. To disinfect the brush, simply give it a spray and let it sit for a bit. Then, just rinse it with hot water. You can do this right over the toilet because we'll be putting the brush between the seat and the bowl to let it dry. Oh, and don't forget to clean the toilet brush holder too, to keep things extra sanitary.

Now let's talk about the don’t

We've all heard about those amazing cleaning hacks for our toilets, where we simply toss some cleaning products into the tank, and voila - a sparkling bowl and a delightful aroma with every flush. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, brace yourselves because there's a catch! This time-saving trick may end up costing you big bucks in the long run. When you introduce these cleaning products into the tank, they deteriorate the vital components of your toilet. Eventually, you'll start experiencing leaks or even worse - a toilet that refuses to flush properly. Say hello to expensive toilet repairs or, worst case scenario, a complete toilet replacement. And as if that wasn't enough, most toilet brands won't give you warranty coverage if you use these in-tank cleaners. Yes, you read that right - it's a warranty void! So, if you value your money and want to save yourself from a potential toilet disaster, steer clear of those in-tank cleaners. Trust us, there are better, safer ways to keep your toilet clean and fresh without any costly consequences. Let's protect our wallets and our beloved porcelain thrones, shall we?

Who really enjoys cleaning the toilet? Well, maybe a few cleaning enthusiasts out there. But when it's time to tackle the task, we want to do it right without causing any damage. And if you ever find yourself in a plumbing jam, fear not! Duncan Plumbing is here to save the day.
