It’s the question every homeowner asks at one time or another: why is my faucet leaking? A leaking faucet is every homeowner’s pet peeve. The constant drip coming from the faucet is not only annoying but it will add up to gallons of water wasted over time. Do you have a  high water bill ? Check that dripping faucet or  running toilet . Here are the top reasons your faucet is leaking & how to repair:

The Shower Cartridge & Stem Causes Leaking

Every common faucet will have what is called a cartridge. The tub or shower cartridge is a mechanism that is housed inside the handle of the faucet that regulates the pressure and temperature of the water. The cartridge is fastened with a screw from the top. Sometimes the cartridge needs to be completely replaced. However, sometimes it’s as simple as tightening a screw. Whenever water is leaking from the faucet handle, try to tighten the screw.

Faucet Leaking? Replace the Seats & Springs

Another reason why your faucet is leaking can be caused by the seats & springs of the cartridge. This is very common when we get calls for, “why is my outside faucet leaking”? Seats and springs are used to support the cartridge and prevent water from leaking around it from the supply line. However, at times the rubber seats become cracked and brittle. When that happens, the springs rust and must be replaced.

Tub & Shower Leaks

When it comes to tubs and showers, the same principle applies when you need to repair a faucet that is leaking. Newer tubs and showers typically have a single regulator with one stem. Replacing the stem on these devices will be typically straight forward as long as you have the correct seat and springs to go along with the model. Older tubs and showers will have two knobs for hot and cold and sometimes a third to divert the shower head. If you have a rusted out faucet due to age or mineral deposits, you need to take this opportunity to replace the faucet.

The Diverter & Leaking Faucet

Another issue that comes with your tub is the diverter. A diverter is used to shift water from the spout to the shower head. Even though the shower head is in operation, water may still flow out of the spout which means the diverter needs repair. Water coming out of the handle that won’t stop, you have a broken shower diverter.
