Daylight Saving and Your Plumbing

Now that we have all settled into the time change from last week, let's talk about daylight savings and its possible impact on your plumbing system.

What is Daylight Savings and How did it Start?

Daylight Savings Time (DST) is a process of adjusting the clocks during summer months to make better use of natural daylight. It was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, although he never actually implemented it. In 1895, George Vernon Hudson proposed an adjusted clock time based on his interests in astronomy and entomology. The idea eventually caught on and was adopted by many countries around the world as a way to save energy while maximizing available daylight hours in the summertime.

The way Daylight Savings works is that clocks are ‘moved forward’ one hour during certain times of the year, usually twice a year (once in spring and once again in autumn/fall). This means one hour less sleep time for most people, but it also means an extra hour of daylight in the evening and can be beneficial for getting outside and enjoying activities during the summer months.

But Does Daylight Saving Have an Impact on Your Plumbing?

On one hand, the warmer weather prompts us to spend time in our yards and raises water usage for activities like watering the lawn. However, on the other hand...Daylight Saving can have a remarkable effect on plumbing systems. Every time we move our clocks forward or backward, water pressure fluctuates due to the higher demand for water consumption during this twice-yearly event. To help you reduce these expenses while still staying hydrated this spring, here are some helpful tips on how to save water and money:

  • Investing in energy-efficient appliances such as washing machines and toilets can save you money over time.
  • By turning off the water while brushing your teeth and handwashing dishes, you can save gallons of precious water. Remember to only turn on the tap when needed!
  • Cut down the length of your showers - this simple action can make a big difference when it comes to conserving water.
  • To conserve water and help the environment, taking baths is a great option! Not only will you use less water, but it's also an enjoyable experience that can help relax your mind. So, take the time to give yourself some much-needed rest while doing something good for our planet!
  • Maximizing the use of your dishwasher by running it at full capacity can help you save time, energy, and money.
  • Carefully inspect all your pipes, hoses, faucets, and couplings for any potential leaks.

If you detect a water leak, contact a professional like Duncan Plumbing immediately. Our experienced plumbers can help you identify the source of the issue and repair it quickly.

By taking the time to practice water conservation, you can keep your water bill in check while still enjoying all the summer activities that Daylight Saving has to offer! Happy water saving!
