Did You Know Christmas is the Busiest Time for clogged drains and garbage disposal backups?

It’s the busiest time of the year and that means overtime for your home’s plumbing systems. Extra guests in your home can mean your toilet is working overtime. That is extra work from all the paper to flushing diapers, wipes, feminine products. Nothing is more annoying than a drain problem or clogged toilet to spoil your holiday party. Not only your drains but heavy usage from your holiday feast with all the extra scraps can cause big problems with your garbage disposal. The exact time you need the disposal most is when the garbage disposal can quit working.  In fact, the two most common plumbing problems around the holidays include clogged drains and garbage disposal backups.

• Drain clogging up • Garbage disposal backing up

If you find yourself with a clogged drain or garbage disposal back up, you can get those stubborn plumbing problems taken care of before Christmas with Duncan Plumbing’s professional Waxahachie & Ellis County plumbing services.

Your best bet is always to avoid plumbing problems. Below are tips to avoid spending your Christmas bonus on plumbing problems like a clogged toilet, clogged drain or backed up and broken garbage disposal.

Clogged Drains

Holidays often mean more people and increased use of the sewage and septic drains.
Here are some tips to keep your drains clear:
• Cover the drains with strainers to keep items from entering the pipes and causing a clog or slow drain issues. Do not put scraps, peels, seeds or fibrous foods down the disposal.
• Run hot water down the drain after each use. This will help flush away grease and buildup as opposed to sticking to the sides of the pipe.
• Add a handful of baking soda to your drains and follow with hot water. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner and will help remove odors. Vinegar is another great natural cleaner for drains.

Garbage disposal

• Avoid putting any grease or oil down the disposal. It could solidify inside the drain, causing a clogged drain.
• Don’t put potato or squash peels down the garbage disposal. They tend to get stuck within the drain and could potentially cause a stoppage or cause your sink to drain very slowly.
• Avoid putting rice or pasta down the garbage disposal. Rice & pasta are bad for the disposal.
• Don’t put fibrous materials such as celery, corn husks, etc. They could get stuck around the blade, causing the disposal to jam and potentially wear out your motor.

Keep your drains and garbage disposal in mind this holiday season and you’re sure to avoid a holiday emergency.
