Bubble, Bubble Toil and Clogs?

Everyone experiences those long days or yearns for a self-care day, where they simply desire to indulge in a hot bubble bath to alleviate stress and soothe tired muscles. While this harmless and luxurious ritual may seem innocuous to most, it's important to consider the potential consequences it may have on your plumbing. Let us elaborate.

Clogs

Just like any other item in your tub or shower, your plumbing can accumulate soap scum and residue due to bath products. And no matter your age, bubbles always bring joy, but they can also contribute to pipe blockages. Bubbles and other products containing oily or lanolin-based soap can create a coating inside the pipes. As the pipes become coated, it restricts the flow and attracts grime and debris. The oils from your bubble bath can congeal with glitter, colorants, and even hair, leading to significant blockages.

While indulging in a relaxing bubble bath is by no means discouraged, it is important to exercise caution when it comes to what goes down your drain. Fortunately, there are practical methods to effectively remove grime and dirt.

  • Baking soda and vinegar: Pour 1/2 cup baking soda, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Let it sit for about half an hour to an hour and then follow with boiling water.
  • A Bob Vila suggestion. Baking soda and cream of tartar: Combine two cups of baking soda with 1/8th cup of cream of tartar and a half cup of salt. Mix the solution in a jar by giving it a good shake. Pour two cups of boiling water down the drain and add your homemade mix. Let it sit for at least an hour. The salt and baking soda will work on the clog, while the cream of tartar cleans metals.
  • Salt, Borax, and Vinegar: Pour 1/4 cup salt, followed by 1/4 cup borax down the drain. Pour 1/2 cup vinegar down and finish with a pot of boiling water. Let sit for one hour or until it clears.

To avoid clogs, it is recommended to routinely clean your drains using one of the aforementioned cleaners. Select your preferred option and perform the cleaning once a month to maintain a clear and fresh drain.
