Are Bath Bombs Bad for Your Plumbing?

Do you use a bath bomb to help you relax? Unfortunately, many people don’t realize that the use of bath bombs can actually have a negative impact on plumbing systems.

What is a bath bomb?

Bath bombs are a combination of baking soda, citric acid, essential oils, and other ingredients that you drop into your tub. When the bath bomb is activated by water, it creates a fizzing effect in the tub which can be quite enjoyable. While the essential components of bath bombs remain consistent, there are countless varieties with additional ingredients. You can find many scented options infused with fragrant oils and perfumes along with colorful versions bursting in vibrant dyes and glitters to transform your water into a luxurious spectrum!

What do you need to know about bath bombs?

  • When salts fail to dissolve completely, they can rapidly lead to a blockage in your drain; these left-over pieces may end up stuck inside the pipes and cause further obstruction by trapping hair and other particles. This could eventually result in a full-blown clog.
  • Homeowners must be mindful when selecting bath bombs since oil is a common ingredient. In particular, oils that liquefy in warm water but solidify at room temperature have the potential to cause clogs within drains. Thus, one should take special care to ensure that any chosen product does not contain such ingredients!
  • While it may look pleasing to add a few extra ingredients such as confetti, glitter, and petals in your bath bombs; they don't always have the best outcome when washed down your drain. These extra additives can cause residue build-up over time resulting in plumbing problems.

Hot tubs

Utilizing bath bombs in a hot tub can be disastrous! Just one or two uses and the delicate inner workings of this device are put at peril. It's not unusual for small pieces contained within these products to cause blockages, which eventually lead to malfunctioning jets and other costly clogs. Avoid utilizing bath bombs if you want the performance of your hot tub to stay top-notch!

Don't let plumbing fears stop you from indulging in a luxurious bubble bath experience - there are still ways to enjoy your favorite bath bombs without wreaking havoc on your pipes!

  • Avoid plumbing issues down the road by wrapping your bath bomb in a nylon cover to prevent any decorative materials from ending up in drains. You can easily make one of these yourself with an old pair of pantyhose! Just cut off one leg, place your bath bomb inside, and tie it closed. While this may not be aesthetically pleasing, it will save you from dealing with unwanted clogs later on.
  • Keep your bathtub's drain in pristine condition by using vinegar regularly. Simply dispense white vinegar into the sink and let it sit for several minutes before flushing with hot water to remove any residue or oils that may have built up. Don't wait until clogs occur; use this simple method now and prevent plumbing problems from emerging later!

If your bathtub is draining at a snail's pace after indulging in too many luxurious bath bombs, don't wait any longer to give Duncan Plumbing a call. We'll be sure that your pipes are up and running smoothly once more!
